ChatGPT Search ranks local service businesses based on five measurable signals: crawlability (the page must be open to OpenAI’s crawlers, including OAI-SearchBot, which ChatGPT search uses), structured content (answers must be formatted so AI can extract a clear response), schema markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, and FAQPage schemas increase recognition), cross-platform citations (the same name, address and phone number, or NAP, across Yelp, BBB, and 40+ directories), and review signals (volume and recency of Google reviews). Businesses that appear in ChatGPT local answers typically have all five signals present. Many local businesses are missing several of them. The fastest improvement is schema markup and GBP citation consistency — both achievable within 30 days of starting optimization work.
ChatGPT Search launched in late 2024 and quickly became one of the fastest-growing discovery channels for local services. When a user asks ChatGPT "who is the best dentist in Kokomo Indiana" or "find me a reliable plumber in Sheboygan," the model does not rely on its training data — it performs a real-time web search and synthesizes results from the pages it finds. Your ability to appear in those answers depends entirely on how well structured and how credible your website looks to the AI crawler.
There are five things that directly influence whether ChatGPT recommends your business. First, your website must be crawlable — add a llms.txt file at your root domain that guides AI crawlers to your most important pages. Second, your service pages must directly answer specific questions in a clear, structured format. AI models favor pages that say "We provide emergency HVAC repair in Findlay, Ohio" over pages that just say "Contact us for all your heating needs." Third, your business must be mentioned and verified across multiple authoritative sources — Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, and industry directories all feed into ChatGPT's confidence score for your business. Fourth, your website needs proper schema markup so the AI can read your business type, location, hours, and services without ambiguity. Fifth, third-party reviews and mentions signal to ChatGPT that real customers trust you — which makes the model more likely to recommend you confidently.
Five factors drive ChatGPT Search rankings: crawlability, structured content, schema markup, cross-platform citations, and review signals. All five are covered in every Klimbiq plan.
Businesses that show up in ChatGPT answers did not get there by chance. They built the right technical foundation 6–12 months ago. Starting now puts you ahead of the vast majority of your local competitors. Get a free audit to see where you stand.
ChatGPT Search ranks businesses based on crawlability, structured content, schema markup, cross-platform citations, and review signals — not paid placement. Every factor is fixable with the right technical foundation.
A 30-day starter checklist
- Check your robots.txt file and make sure it does not block OAI-SearchBot, the crawler ChatGPT search uses.
- Add LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema to your homepage and service pages.
- Publish an llms.txt file that sums up your services, service area and contact details.
- Fix your name, address and phone number on Google, Yelp, BBB and your main industry directories.
- Rewrite the opening lines of each service page so they answer one question directly, for example “We repair and replace water heaters in Findlay, Ohio.”
- Ask every customer for a Google review, and reply to each one.
How to check where you stand
Ask ChatGPT the question your customers ask, for example “Who is the best HVAC company in Dayton, Ohio?”, and see whether your business is named. Answers change from one ask to the next, so check a few times. Our free AI visibility check runs this test for you, and our AI search (GEO) service covers all five signals.
