What Is GEO — and Why It Matters More Every Month

More customers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI answers who to call. GEO is the work that helps those tools find, understand and recommend your business.

Definition

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring website content, schema markup, and entity signals so that AI platforms — including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and Apple Intelligence — confidently recommend a business in conversational search responses. Unlike traditional SEO which targets keywords, GEO targets AI comprehension, entity recognition, and answer extraction. In a May 2025 study of local business searches, Google showed an AI Overview on 68% of the queries tested (Whitespark, 2025).

Key takeaway

GEO is a separate optimization layer that determines whether AI platforms recommend your business for conversational queries. Most competitors have not started — which means early movers gain lasting advantages.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — structuring your website so AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini confidently recommend your business. When someone asks an AI platform for a service provider nearby, the businesses that appear have GEO-optimized sites. Most of your competitors do not — few local service businesses have any GEO optimization in place yet.

Key takeaway

GEO is not SEO with a new name. It is a separate optimization layer that determines whether AI platforms recommend your business when users ask conversational queries like "best HVAC company near me" or "top-rated dentist in [city]".

GEO reinforces your traditional rankings while opening a second discovery channel most competitors haven't touched yet. AI assistants are a fast-growing way people now find local businesses.

How AI tools choose a local business

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews for a local recommendation, the tool usually searches the web, reads the pages it can reach and writes a short answer that names a few businesses. To be named, a business needs to be easy to find and easy to trust.

  • Reachable. AI crawlers are allowed to read your website.
  • Clear. Your pages say plainly what you do, where you work and how to reach you.
  • Consistent. Your name, address and phone number match across your website, Google profile and directories.
  • Trusted. Reviews, credentials and mentions on other reputable sites back up what your website says.

What GEO work involves

GEO builds on a solid local SEO foundation, then adds a layer written for AI tools.

  • Allowing AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (used by ChatGPT search) and PerplexityBot in your robots.txt file.
  • Adding schema markup (LocalBusiness and FAQPage) so your business details are machine-readable.
  • Publishing an llms.txt file: a plain summary of your business for AI tools. It is a newer, proposed convention that not every tool reads yet, but it costs little to add.
  • Rewriting service pages so the first lines answer the question a customer would ask.
  • Earning mentions and reviews on trusted sites in your industry.

GEO and SEO work together

GEO does not replace local SEO. Google’s AI Overviews draw on pages Google already indexes, and ChatGPT and Perplexity look for the same trust signals that help on Google Maps. That is why every Klimbiq plan includes both.
