Dental practices operate in one of the most competitive local search environments of any service business. Every mid-size US city has 10–40 dentists competing for the same Maps Pack positions. The practices ranking in the top 3 are not necessarily the best clinicians — they are the ones who have built the strongest local search signals. This checklist covers the 40 most impactful items specific to dental practices.

Completing at least 30 of these 40 items gives your practice a strong local SEO foundation in a small to mid-size US market. Many practices start well below that on a first check. Every unchecked item is a direct ranking opportunity.

If you only have one afternoon

Start with the five items that most often hold a dental practice back.

  1. Set “Dentist” as the primary category, and add categories for the specialties you offer, such as “Cosmetic dentist” or “Emergency dental service”.
  2. List every treatment as a separate service on your Google Business Profile.
  3. Connect your online booking link and turn on the new-patients attribute.
  4. Reply to every review from the last six months.
  5. Check that your practice name, address and phone number match on Google, Healthgrades, Yelp and Zocdoc.
